The second-generation Toyota C-HR 2023 will be made at Toyota's facility in Turkey, making it the first plug-in hybrid passenger car made in the nation, according to the company's announcement. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT), located in the northwest province of Sakarya, will manufacture the new Toyota C-HR's hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. Toyota's first plant in Europe to start producing plug-in hybrid cars and the first to have a battery production line is TMMT.
According to Toyota, the 2019 Toyota C-HR's 100% electric powertrain lineup underlines Toyota's commitment to providing the biggest and most competitive market sector in Europe with sufficient carbon reduction options. The company pledged to achieve complete carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040, and it established a target of achieving carbon neutrality in all of its production sites by 2030.
In addition to the hybrid model, the new plug-in hybrid Toyota C-HR, which has batteries that are locally made, will broaden Toyota's multi-technology offering in the direction of its goal of a 100% CO2 reduction in its vehicle lineup in Europe by 2035. Around €317 million ($345.72 million) will be invested in the project, bringing the total amount invested in TMMT to about €2.3 billion.
TMMT will construct a new plug-in battery assembly line with a 75,000 unit annual capacity within its plant, which will run alongside the car assembly line. Beginning in December 2023, the production of plug-in hybrid batteries will add 60 new high-skill employment. TMMT will upgrade and expand its manufacturing line as part of the new model investment, while also setting up the foundation to satisfy evolving demands for production diversity and flexibility.
Toyota's investment in TMMT, which is moving towards carbon neutrality by implementing technologies that reduce energy usage while also converting to renewable energy inside the Sakarya plant, is a reflection of the company's dedication to this goal. These actions include implementing modern paint shop technologies that reduce CO2 emissions and utilising solar energy to make the facility energy self-sufficient.
The TMMT management has responded to the launch of this initiative with enthusiasm. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Türkiye's president and CEO, Erdoan Ahin, stated that this initiative is another proof of Sakarya's production facility's importance to Toyota on a global scale.
